With the round of fall career fairs upon us, it is essential that you are fully prepared for the next step in the internship/job search process: interviews! After all, the goal of all that time you spent waiting in lines at career fairs to talk to recruiters so that you could hand them your resume is to have them schedule an interview. Now that you have secured the interview, it is essential that you do a bit of work before heading into the interview.
With graduation just over a week away, this will probably be my last blog. Sadly, my college times are coming to a close. Yesterday, I spent "reading day" at the golf course. My minor program (Technology & Management/T&M) hosted its annual "Golf Scramble" for outgoing seniors. I put my skills to work that I learned in my golf class and had a great afternoon golfing with 3 of my peers in the program and a faculty member from the College of Business. It was my first time golfing 9 holes, but it went surprisingly better than expected.
Afterwards, we had a T&M farewell dinner where our class gathered at i-Hotel for a brief banquet. We enjoyed a "Cinco de Mayo" themed dinner, gave out goofy class awards, and discussed our plans for the future. My peers in the program shared excitingpost-graduation plans that include everything from grad school at Ivy leagues to jobs at Google, Boeing, and JP Morgan.
I have one week before my first (of four) graduation ceremonies, and while I'm sad to say goodbye, I'm already excited for my future life as a University of Illinois alumnus!
With the recent round of career fairs and Engineering Expo, it is important to be aware of an important resource that can assist you in the internship and job hunt. Engineering Career Services (ECS) provides information and several resources to help you find a fitting summer, semester, co-op, or full-time position. They offer resume reviews and mock interviews to make sure that you are well prepared for making the best first impression. They also offer a job-shadow program where students can follow a working engineer for a day or a few days over winter break. There is also counseling for career choices, seminars, and workshops to help you advance in your career.
A recently graduated friend of mine recently sent me an article that I found particularly interesting. The article brings out the distinction between science and engineering, it can be found here: http://spectrum.ieee.org/at-work/tech-careers/engineering-is-not-science.
The last thing on your mind when looking at schools is probably your career options and your path after graduation. This is something that should be developed over your college career, and I wanted to share my experiences with the full-time job search that I am currently undertaking, and how Illinois has supported my during this search.
“Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive”
Howard Thurman.
Growing up I always wanted to do something that would help make people’s lives better and give my life purpose and meaning. Civil and environmental engineering is a profession I chose because it allows me to utilize my engineering skills to serve the community while giving me the freedom to express my artistic and entrepreneurship interests in whichever projects I pursue. This perfect combination is hard to find and is what drives me in life to accomplish my dreams.
This week I got my housing assignment for my internship this summer. I’m really excited to be returning to General Mills. I worked for the company last year too as an “Engineering/Operations Intern.” It was pretty much my dream job….I got to work on projects for Golden Grahams, my favorite cereal. I worked in a plant, so I loved smelling the aroma of fresh cereal every morning as I pulled into work. Besides working, I also got to hang out with the other interns at dinners, baseball games, movies, and even a few service projects. This summer, I’ll be working at a different General Mills plant, so I’ll be exposed to different products and a new town. I can’t wait!
